Beyond the Bars Conference FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions about our Beyond the Bars Conference

1. How much is registration?

Thanks to our partners and supporters, registration for the conference is free and open to the public.

2. When will registration be open?

Registration is now open. Register here

3. Where will the conference take place?

Exact locations to be announced soon. The conference always takes place partially on Columbia University's campus and local historic sites in Harlem.

4. Can my organization table at the event?

Our tabling event is only on one day for two hours. Because of the limited space and a desire to have a variety of groups represented, we often partially curate the event. If you are interested though you can reach out to us at [email protected] and we will take your organization into consideration.

5. Can I speak at the conference?

We curate our plenaries each year to fit our theme and goals, and reach out to desired speakers directly. Our workshops are submission based and you can submit here. Submissions are due January 9, 2026.

6. Are workshop speakers paid?

Unfortunately, because we have a limited budget and try to have as many workshops as we can, we are not able to compensate workshop leaders at this time.

7. Will there be overflow?

For Saturday and Sunday plenaries, there are usually 125 seats. After we reach capacity there will be seats available in overflow rooms with livestreams.

8. Will the event be live-streamed?

Yes. Thursday and Friday night and Saturday and Sunday plenaries will all be live-streamed. Workshops will not be live-streamed. Live-streaming can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/@centerforjusticeatcolumbia2629

9. Will ID be required?

ID is required, but all ages are welcome at this event and we strongly encourage young people to attend.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to security measures on Columbia’s campus, it is important that you register. Policies around off campus guests have become more restricted. You can ensure you will get into the conference by registering for free.

10. Do you offer scholarships to people wanting to attend the conference?

Unfortunately we are not able to offer scholarships for travel or accommodations in addition to free registration. However, many people find success with organizations or universities supporting or partially supporting their participation in the conference so we encourage you to reach out to your work or other ogranizations you are affiliated with.

11. Do you have suggestions for hotels or have special rates with hotels?

Here is a list of hotels suggested by Columbia with potential discounted rates to guests. The conference will take place uptown, between 116th and Broadway and 122nd and Amsterdam.
