Please join Brooklyn Law School and the Survivors Justice Project during Domestic Violence Awareness Month for a timely policy discussion on the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act (DVSJA), a landmark New York sentencing reform law enacted in 2019, and the profound link between domestic violence and incarceration.  The DVSJA aims to reduce sentences for survivors of domestic violence where the offenses for which they are prosecuted stemmed from their own victimization. Incarcerated people and people facing prosecution are too often left out of conversations during domestic violence awareness campaigns, even though their experiences are essential to understanding and advancing survivor-centered justice.

Wednesday, Oct. 28, 12:15 to 1:45 p.m.

Lunch will be provided

The event will feature members of the Survivors Justice Project (SJP), a collective dedicated to the decarceration of survivors of domestic violence and students from the BLS Criminal Defense & Advocacy Clinic who have been working with survivors serving extreme sentences. The panel will look at how the DVSJA currently operates and offer ideas for further reforms to eliminate roadblocks survivors face in accessing justice to ensure that every survivor has the opportunity to seek meaningful sentencing relief.

The discussion will be moderated by Brooklyn Law School Professor Kate Mogulescu, founder and Legal & Policy Director of the Survivors Justice Project.
