We are THRILLED to announce we will be screening our short documentary Degrees of Freedom at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 24!
Degrees of Freedom is a short documentary and product of our Women Transcending Oral History Research Project (OHRP). OHRP lifts up the work that women – particularly women of color – who have been locked up and locked out of politics and civil society, do and have done to forge supportive networks undergirding positive change.
Degrees of Freedom Synopsis: In the tough-on-crime 1990s, harsh laws eliminated college programs in American prisons. Refusing to accept this injustice, women at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility were determined to continue their education on their own terms. Their achievement became a widely emulated model, leading to thousands of incarcerated people earning diplomas. Now, these women are bringing their story to new audiences. Created by the same inspiring group of women who rescued college, Degrees of Freedom chronicles their powerful journey of organizing behind and through the bars of New York’s only maximum-security prison for women to create a transformative community of care — reclaiming their futures and challenging the narrative of who they are and what they can achieve.
If you live in Los Angeles or surrounding areas we would love to have you join us for a screening and talkback on June 24 at 4:45 pm at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, 6925 Hollywood Blvd.
