Today, we remember and honor our co-founder, friend, and sister Kathy Boudin who joined the ancestors four years ago today.

Today, we remember and honor our co-founder, friend, and sister Kathy Boudin who joined the ancestors four years ago today. We miss her every day.

Many know of Kathy’s work since she came home from prison, co-founding both the Center for Justice and the Release Aging People in Prison Campaign and advocating for people still in prison to have meaningful opportunities for release. Perhaps lesser known is the work she did while she was inside, supporting women pursuing their education.

Kathy was passionate about ensuring incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women not only had access to education but that their advocacy work is well documented and a known part of prison advocacy history. Our Oral History Research Project does just that. Through the short documentary Degrees of Freedom and a series of oral interviews, we document the advocacy of Kathy, Cheryl, and other women while they were incarcerated in Bedford Hills to bring the college program back after prison college programs were cancelled overnight across the country in the 90s.

Degrees of Freedom will be screening next Friday, May 8 at the CUNY Film Festival, curated by students and open to the public. We would love for you to join us to learn about the incredible organizing of Kathy and the women in Bedford to establish the educational program that still exists inside New York State prisons today.

The screening is free and open to the public. No ticket needed but spots are first come, first served.

Date and Time: Friday, May 8 @ 3pm

Location: Macaulay Honors College, 35 W 67th Street

Kathy’s legacy lives on through the Center and the many, many people to which she was a mentor, friend, and sister. We hope you will join us in remembering her today and do something in her honor.

Thanks for being a friend and supporter of the Center and of Kathy and her family.
