About Women Building Up (WBU)
The mission of Women Building Up (WBU) is to advance gender, racial, and social justice through supporting women, girls, and gender expansive people – especially people most directly impacted by incarceration, racism, gender oppression, and inequity – to claim their power to transform themselves and the world. We work to uplift our community, in New York, across the country, and around the world. We are not all the same, yet we have many values in common. We are courageous leaders, activists, and passionate visionaries as we contribute to the growth of larger grassroots movements to advance equitable justice for women.
Our vision is tied to the spirit in each of us and is based on integrity and authenticity, as we uplift and build out the women's movement. We envision building up our communities to a place of stability, sustainability, and personal and professional advancement.
We acknowledge our roots; we center and make visible the most impacted; we work from love, not fear; we care for each other as a community; we engage in struggle to transform future generations; we engage, uplift, and honor ourselves and our communities in every decision. We own our stories and this process is led by us and for us, as we lift up each other's voices.
About Celebration Week
Celebration Week is a preview of how Women Building Up can and will convene activists and organizers across multiple social justice communities to gather in solidarity and build a dignified and just world for justice-impacted women, girls, and gender-expansive people.
Celebration Week consists of two free public events: Moving In Solidarity (September 21) and Community Open House (September 24). Both events will take place downtown Brooklyn at the WBU headquarters (located at 401 State Street | Brooklyn, NY 11217).
Event #1: Moving In Solidarity
Saturday, September 21, 2024
Noon - 6:00pm (the special gathering)
6:00pm – 9:00pm (dance party)
The Moving In Solidarity gathering will bring together activists working on various intersecting issues, ranging from criminal justice to gender equity. The event will enable participants to better understand the issues and how they are critical for ending oppression and inequity in various communities across New York City and beyond. As the country nears another presidential election and the reality of a nation divided, leaders and community members will discuss social justice movements, where and how they intersect, and where we can go from here. The gathering will be organized around two panels and three breakout groups.
PLUS! WBU will also host a dance party with a DJ from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm!
